These objectives are based on what 2 – 4 year old children were learning throughout my teaching career. I would choose one or two activities a day to concentrate on with an idea to complete one theme a week.
Language
- Develop speaking skills by talking in conversations and using new vocabulary
- Develop listening skills by reading books, following one step instructions. If your child is older you can do two or three step instructions. For example, “Please go get a cup, then fill it with milk and then sit at the table”.
- Learn pre-reading and pre-writing. Start to learn that words have meaning
Science & Sensory
- Ask what, why, how questions
- Learn to ask what, why, how questions
- Learn how to solve problems
- Explore the senses using sensory table activities
- Learn about the natural world such as life cycles, living things and the weather
- Explore gravity, motion and magnetic forces
- Explore technology and its various applications
- Use tools for experiments
Art & Music
- Create and experience visual art
- Create and experience dramatic art
- Sing and or listen to music
- Listen to and play instruments
- Learn about rhythm, beat, melodies
Math
- Learn about numbers. You can do this by doing activities that help your child count and understand quantity
- Learn about spatial relationships such as, in/out, over/under, on/off, up/down
- Learn how to classify items, such as sorting objects by size, color and shape
- Learn about measurements. You can do this by choosing activities that teach your child to understand the difference between, longer/shorter, more/less, tall/short
- Learn how to identify shapes
- Learn about the concept of time, such as past, present and future
Motor Skills
- Building the gross motor muscles (arms, legs, overall body, large exercises like dancing or playing sports
- Building the fine motor muscles (fingers, toes, facial features. Exercises like learning to write, and using tongs or scissors)
Social & Emotional
- Learn to develop an awareness of emotions
- Learn to develop good hygiene practices
- Create a strong sense of self
- Learn to be empathetic and build friendships
- Learn about the impact we have on other people and the world
